Episcopal Bishop Will Be Installed
The Rev. Chester L. Talton, the first black bishop elected to serve the Episcopal Church in the Western United States, will be installed as suffragan (assistant) bishop in the Diocese of Los Angeles next Saturday.
Presiding Bishop Edmond L. Browning of New York will lead the 10 a.m. ceremony and Bishop Barbara Harris, suffragan bishop of Massachusetts, will preach.
The rites will be held at the Lake Avenue Congregational Church in Pasadena, one of the few churches in the area able to handle the expected crowd of 3,000 people.
Talton, 49, was rector of a large Episcopal parish in the Harlem section of New York City when he was elected last June 9 as an assistant to the Rt. Rev. Frederick Borsch of Los Angeles. The diocese encompasses parishes in Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, Santa Barbara, San Bernardino and part of Riverside counties.
