The National Football League’s countdown to Super Bowl XXV highlights a television sports weekend which includes the National Hockey League’s All-Star Game and the usual schedule of college and pro basketball games.

Sunday’s NFL conference championships annually mark one of the best days of the season for football fans, because of the possibility of viewing two exciting, well-played games. There is a local rooting interest for the first time in five seasons as the Raiders travel to Buffalo for the AFC Championship (9:30 a.m., Channels 4, 36 and 39). The San Francisco 49ers will try to become the first team since the 1971-73 Miami Dolphins (and only the second ever) to reach three consecutive Super Bowls, when they face the New York Giants in the NFC Championship (1 p.m., Channels 2 and 8).

College Basketball: Six Southland teams and six members of the Associated Press’ Top 25 can be seen this weekend. Today’s 13-game schedule includes games between No. 6 Arizona and Villanova (11:30 a.m., Channels 2 and 8); Stanford and USC (3 p.m., Channels 2 and 63); Memphis State and No. 18 Southern Mississippi (3 p.m., SportsChannel); No. 5 North Carolina and No. 12 Duke (5 p.m., ESPN); Texas El Paso and San Diego State (7:30 p.m., Prime Ticket); Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount (8 p.m., SportsChannel) and No. 1 Nevada Las Vegas and Cal State Long Beach (10 p.m., SportsChannel.) On Sunday, No. 7 UCLA hopes to end its two-game losing streak when it plays host to California at 4 p.m. on Channels 2 and 63.
