A woman who ran out of gas on California 94 was struck and killed by a truck as she ran across the freeway to get help, the California Highway Patrol said.

Tina Box, 29, of San Diego was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center where she died at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Chuck Bolton of the county medical examiner’s office said.

Box was driving east on California 94 near Interstate 805 when she ran out of gas and pulled over to the center divider, a CHP spokeswoman said.

Box got out of her car, climbed over the divider and started to run across the freeway when she was struck by a pickup about 2:50 p.m., the spokeswoman said. The driver of the truck, Dwaine Adelbert, 37, said he did not see her until it was too late. He was not cited.

Bolton said Box had several children.
