Man Who Ambushed Brother Gets Life
A man convicted in the ambush killing of his brother outside a North Hollywood apartment building was sentenced Friday to life in prison without parole.
Charles Samuel Miller, 48, of Los Angeles, was sentenced by Van Nuys Superior Court Judge Judith M. Ashmann for fatally shooting his 52-year-old brother, Walter A. Miller, on Aug. 21, 1988.
Authorities said Charles Miller hid in a laundry room at the apartment complex in the 13200 block of Vanowen Street where his brother lived and shot him in the chest as he walked by.
Investigators determined that the two had a long history of animosity between them. Charles Miller had accused his brother of siding with his ex-wife in a custody battle over his 8-year-old son.
A jury convicted Miller of the murder May 18, 1990. According to court records, he has a prior criminal record that includes arrests for kidnaping and statutory rape in 1966. In the mid-1970s he served nearly four years in prison for an involuntary manslaughter conviction.
