FUDDIES AND DUDDIES

Share

I read your Book Review with great interest, once I can find it in the pounds of Sunday paper. If secreted in the Opinion section, I have to wait until my husband lets go, being privileged to keep that part indefinitely.

We add to our lists of carefully chosen titles from your reviews, and on library mornings, Wednesdays, head for one of three available branch libraries. Sad to say, they have discarded the quick-search card catalogues for some computer form that takes as long to search out one title as the whole list used to.

I take exception to your “dusty domain of fuddy-duddy librarians.” In my 40 years as a librarian, with a BS degree from a fine university, Western Reserve, I never was unlucky enough to be with fuddy duddies. Don’t you realize that fuddy duddies went out nearly a century ago?

If you really want to know where I finally found one, it was in that Jimmy Stewart movie, “Wonderful Life” or some such title. In it, he saved Donna Reed from a fate worse than death, that is, being assigned to earning her living in the town library.

At that point, I got up, left the theater and never bothered seeing the finish of the picture.
