The city’s garbage collection company will temporarily be allowed to charge 11% more for garbage pickups and other services while negotiations for a permanent contract continue.

The City Council on Tuesday voted 5 to 0 to grant the temporary increases to National Environmental Waste Co. under a contract that runs through June.

Under the temporary plan, rates for single-can curbside service would increase on the next bill from $7.35 monthly to $8.16, and service for large dumpsters would increase from $220 to $244 per month.

NEWCO is asking for a 13.3% fee increase and wants a 10-year contract. City officials refused to specify what they are offering. Negotiators on both sides said they hope to reach an agreement before the council’s next meeting, scheduled for Feb. 19.
