From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Norwegians welcomed Harald V as their new king. The monarch, 53, succeeded immediately upon the death of his father, King Olav, who died last week at 87. The country meanwhile mourned Olav, fondly remembered for spurning privilege. He sent his children to public schools and once insisted on queuing on a national health waiting list for an eye operation. Norway adopted a monarchy in 1905 when the country won independence from Sweden.
