A man who police say stole a pistol and a car at a Scott’s Valley gun shop on Friday was shot and killed by officers as he attempted to refuel the vehicle near downtown, authorities said. Police say that Carlos Alberto Machado was shot and killed by police after he fired at officers. He allegedly stole a pistol and car at Markley’s Gun Shop about noon and drove to Santa Cruz, authorities said. By the time the suspect had completed the seven-mile drive on California 17, he was being chased by Santa Cruz and Scott’s Valley police and county sheriff’s deputies. Bill Lovejoy, a photographer for the Santa Cruz Sentinel newspaper, was covering a demonstration at the downtown government center when the suspect pulled up. Lovejoy said he began photographing the armed man. “I shot a couple of frames, (and) he pointed the gun at me and said, ‘Don’t take any more pictures,’ ” Lovejoy said. The gunman fired a few shots and drove to a nearby Shell station, where, gun in hand, he tried to refuel his car. Police pulled up and ordered him to put down the weapon. The suspect apparently raised his gun, and police opened fire, killing the man, witnesses said.
