California IN BRIEF : SACRAMENTO : Suspect’s Arrest Is a Team Effort

A man fleeing from a sheriff’s deputy was caught when he cut across a football field and ran afoul of the Bacon Bombers--a police team practicing for an annual game against the Sheriff’s Department. “I’m sure the person being chased probably wondered what was going on when he . . . saw six huge football officers chasing after him,” said Sacramento Police Capt. Rich Gregson. Police said Lamont L. Phillips, 26, was held for investigation of rape, resisting arrest and false imprisonment. The chase began Thursday after Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies received a report that a woman had been dragged into an apartment. When Deputy Al Linares arrived, he saw a man sprint from the building. Linares gave chase, but said in his report that the fleet-footed man was easily outrunning him. But the man leaped a fence and entered the campus of Christian Brothers High School, cutting across the football field. Linares called for help and the runner was tackled by the officers, who were in football gear.
