Nissan to Begin Construction on Engine Plant: The Japanese car maker said it will start construction late this year on a $500-million car engine plant, its second U.S. facility, outside Decherd, Tenn., near the Alabama state line. Production of 300,000 engines a year is due to begin by 1996, said Jerry Benefield, president of Nissan Motor Manufacturing Corp. U.S.A. Nissan plans to hire about 500 people initially, but total employment at the 1-million-square-foot plant could reach 1,000, he said. Nissan makes Sentras and light pickup trucks 60 miles north in Smyrna, Tenn.
