John E. Drury, 46, has resigned as president and chief operating officer of Browning-Ferris Industries Inc., based on “mutual agreement” with Chairman and CEO William D. Ruckelshaus. Browning-Ferris, a Houston-based waste-services company, said Drury’s duties would be assumed by Ruckelshaus, a former administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency. Ruckelshaus joined the company in 1988. Drury, who had been with the company since 1970, had served as president since 1982. Though Browning-Ferris has recently experienced growth in several areas, including a jump from 40,000 curbside recycling customers to almost 2 million since Ruckelshaus came two years ago, profit dropped last year. In contrast to a net income of $262.6 million on revenue of $2.5 billion, in fiscal 1989, the company reported a year-end net loss of $44.7 million on revenue of $3 billion for 1990.
