Decline in Chip Sales Predicted: U.S. semiconductor industry sales will fall 2.5% this year as a result of the economic downturn, according to a new forecast from the chip research firm In-Stat Inc. Many in the industry are expecting renewed growth this year following a 2.6% decline in 1990, but In-Stat President Jack Beedle says a “deep recession” lasting through 1991 will prevent any rebound. Worldwide industry sales will grow 0.7% this year, Beedle predicted, as Japanese chip vendors benefit from renewed demand for the latest generation of memory chips.
