Two people were killed and another seriously injured in a high-speed car crash that ended a police pursuit, officials said Monday.

The chase began late Sunday in Maywood, where a local police unit chased a speeder eastbound on Slauson Avenue, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Rich Erickson.

Chase speeds exceeded 90 m.p.h., Erickson said, but as the pursuit entered City of Commerce, the Maywood police sergeant in pursuit decided to end his chase, at about 10:20 p.m. At this point, said Erickson, the speeder’s car apparently struck a utility or light pole in or near the intersection of Slauson Avenue and Telegraph Road.
