Football Club Picks Shell as Coach of Year

Raiders Coach Art Shell today was named Coach of the Year by the Maxwell Football Club and Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Randall Cunningham again was named winner of the Bert Bell Award as NFL Player of the Year.

Shell won the second annual Earle (Greasy) Neale Award as outstanding pro coach. Buffalo’s Marv Levy finished second, followed by Kansas City’s Marty Shottenheimer.

Shell, at 44 the youngest coach in the NFL, led the Raiders to the AFC West title in his first full season as coach after taking over in October, 1989.

Cunningham, winner of the Bell award in 1988, beat fellow quarterbacks Joe Montana of San Francisco and Warren Moon of Houston in the voting by NFL coaches, football writers and fans.
