Lynwood : Meeting Slated Tonight on Plans for New High School
The Lynwood Unified School District will hold a community meeting at 6 p.m. today in the Lynwood High School auditorium to discuss the proposed new high school for the overcrowded system.
District officials will answer questions and receive suggestions from community members, parents, students and staff on the construction of the school.
The district, which has nearly 15,000 students, has been attempting since 1983 to build a modern facility to replace its aging and overcrowded high school.
It has been in court for several years in an attempt to reach a settlement in acquiring about 25 acres on Imperial Highway owned by the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Last year, the district completed the purchase of 12 acres next to the church’s land. The price was $24.9 million.
Preliminary plans call for a three-story building to house approximately 3,300 students. Lynwood High is the district’s only comprehensive high school. It was built in 1931 to accommodate 900 students. Current enrollment is 3,400.
