A 4-year-old who suffered burns over most of his body during a fire at his home has died, authorities reported Wednesday.

Anthony Ryan Mays died in the burn ward of the UC San Diego Medical Center at 2:15 a.m. Tuesday, the coroner’s office said.

The boy had suffered second- and third-degree burns over more than 90% of his body after his bed and room caught fire in San Ysidro about 8:50 a.m. Monday.

An apartment maintenance worker took the boy out of his burning room through a window while neighbors tried to put out the fire.

Metro Arson Strike Force investigators determined that the blaze was started in the bedroom by a child playing with a lighter, but they had not determined which one of several other children who were in the house at the time had started it.

Firefighters said the boy’s mother, Cindy Mays, was at home at the time.
