Shelby Steele’s Views on Blacks

Over the last few years I have written you several letters urging you to let your liberal readership learn that there are intelligent, successful black spokesmen who oppose the Jesse Jackson/NAACP racist, quota approach to integration. I have asked you to expose them to the commentary of Walter Williams, Thomas Sowell, et al, who preach that “individual initiative” be stressed as the only way to a truly amiable and workable integrated society.

We have predominantly black basketball, football and baseball teams because blacks excel as athletes. If the Lakers were mandated to playing only two blacks for every 10 whites, the team performance would be significantly reduced. Any other type of endeavor, based on quotas rather than ability, would be similarly affected.

Thank you for finally publishing the views of a black achiever like Steele, professor at San Jose State.
