Aweak storm en route from Hawaii and a cold front moving down the California coast may collide this weekend and bring a smattering of rain by Sunday night, according to the National Weather Service in San Diego.

At the very least, skies will be blanketed in a cloud cover that will roll in this afternoon, forecaster Wilbur Shigehara said. As the barometric pressure falls, the low pressure allows sea breezes to flow onshore. Late-night and early-morning clouds will come rolling in with the breezes.

“There’s not much certainty about the rain, but we might not see too much sun this weekend,” Shigehara said.

Daytime temperatures will stay mild in all parts of the county because the cloud cover will block much of the sunshine, he said. But the cloud cover will also keep nights warmer by keeping warm air close to the earth.

At the beaches, the mercury will inch up to 57 to 61 over the weekend, just above the 57-degree water temperature, Shigehara said. Winds are at 8 to 16 m.p.h., and the surf is breaking at 2 to 4 feet.

Coastal areas will see daytime temperatures of 60 to 65, 47 to 53 at night. Inland highs are expected to range from 63 to 67, dropping to 38 to 48 tonight. Because of the insulating cloud cover, nighttime temperatures will hover at 40 to 50 over the weekend.

Mountain areas will experience highs of 50 to 55 today, dropping to 48 to 52 over the weekend. Tonight will be a cool 29 to 39, but nights will warm by a couple of degrees over the weekend. Gusts up to 25 m.p.h. are expected Sunday.

The mercury in the desert will rise to 68 to 72 today and fall by a degree or two over the weekend. Temperatures of 38 to 48 are expected tonight, warming slightly over the weekend.
