Assassin Kills Muslim Priest Near Tel Aviv
An assassin fatally shot a Muslim priest and his brother Friday on a street corner in Jaffa, an Arab suburb of Tel Aviv, police said.
Police said the murders of Imam Yussuf Ashour and his brother, Hamis, apparently were connected with a family feud. The priest had been wounded in a previous shooting about a year ago.
Jaffa police commander Moshe Mizrahi said the brothers were killed in Tel Aviv by “a masked man who lay in wait for them and apparently knew their route.” Residents said the imam passed along the street nearly every day.
“Masked assailants, who apparently knew the route they usually take, hit them with automatic weapons and fatally shot them. They were dead on arrival at hospital,” Mizrachi said.
Police later detained three suspects for questioning.
