The Gulf War Demonstrations and Their Impact on the Troops

Share

I am writing to respond to something written in the article “Bush Backers Counter the Peace People” (Jan. 19).

The article stated that the anti-war demonstration on Jan. 18 at Laguna Beach High School “eroded because of the Iraqi bombardment of Israel.” This is totally erroneous information.

I am a student at LBHS, and I was at the peace demonstration, along with about 20 other people. We sat on the football field during break and part of a class period, while our fellow schoolmates and administrators stared at and/or jeered us from the sidelines.

The reason we ended the demonstration, however, had nothing to do with Iraq’s bombing of Israel. If anything, that strengthened our call for peace and U.S. withdrawal.

We went back to our classes when we decided we needed to organize the demonstration more effectively, not during class time. This would allow for more people to become involved without anyone having to be punished for missed classes.
