SANTA ANA : African-American Events Are Planned

Rancho Santiago College will be the site of a monthlong schedule of activities in February in recognition of African-American Heritage Month.

The activities, sponsored by the college’s Black Student Union, begin Friday and will climax Feb. 26 with a speech by Benjamin Hooks, executive director of the National Assn. for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).

Regina Stanback-Stroud, faculty adviser to the Black Student Union, said Hooks “is recognized and respected internationally for his leadership, perspective and expertise on issues affecting African-Americans and other peoples of the world.”

The activities include lectures on African-American history, Feb. 4, 11 and 25; a day of African dance and traditional African-American foods in the college’s outdoor amphitheater on Feb. 13; poetry reading at Neally Library on Feb. 20; an African-American fashion and hair show featuring traditional fashions and styles, Feb. 22; and exhibits of African-American art in Neally Library throughout the month.
