Processing Versus Recycling

Share

Your Jan. 14 article, “Recycling Center Far From Secure,” touches upon a vital topic today in Ventura County--waste management. The Times is to be commended for tackling a complex subject.

It should be noted that there are important differences between the subject of the article, Gold Coast Recycling, an intermediate processing center (IPC) and the recycling station proposed by the Ventura Regional Sanitation District. The IPC is without a doubt a pioneering, successful Ventura facility in recovering glass, metals, plastics, cardboard and newspaper--all the clean recyclables.

The IPC currently processes 70 tons per day and has the capacity to process more than 300 tons of recyclable materials a day. Contrast these figures with those of the proposed recycling station, which has a total capacity of 850 tons per day.

Underscoring its long--term commitment to regionalism, the district plans to continue its support of the IPC. The district’s recycling station is scheduled to begin operating in 1993. In fact, currently the district uses the IPC for marketing and some of the recovered materials from the Resource Recovery Center at the Bailard landfill site.

It should also be noted that the district also operates the only permitted Recyclable Household Hazardous Waste Collection Centers in the country and has successfully led sludge and green waste composing efforts.
