BEIJING : New Pro-Democracy Trials

Share

Legal proceedings against pro-democracy activists are expected to continue this week as the Chinese government moves to punish leaders of the 1989 Tian An Men Square protests while the world is preoccupied with the Persian Gulf War.

Among the prominent political detainees yet to face formal trial are Chen Ziming, former publisher of the now-banned Economic Studies Weekly, its editor Wang Juntao, legal scholar Chen Xiaoping and physicist Liu Gang. All four have been accused of plotting to overthrow the government.

Fourteen other dissidents, including Wang Dan, a key student leader, have already been sentenced to prison terms of two to seven years.
