OXNARD-PORT HUENEME : Emergency Food Centers May Close

Share

Two centers that provide emergency food for as many as 30 Oxnard and Port Hueneme families a day may close within a month for lack of funds, officials said.

“We are seeing at least 50% more people than last year,” said Curtis Fast, president of the Oxnard-Port Hueneme Community Food Pantry, which runs the two food banks. “We have them lined up every evening five nights a week.”

The organization has little more than $1,000 left, he said.

The centers are at All Saints Episcopal Church, Second and C streets, in Oxnard and at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 755 Bard Road, in Port Hueneme.

Each pantry opens for an hour each weekday and volunteers distribute pasta, vegetables, bread and rice.

Last year, the pantries spent about $9,000 serving 2,988 families and 11,496 individuals, 90% of whom were one-time users, Fast said.
