MOORPARK : Educators, City Discuss School Site

Share

The Moorpark Unified School District Board and the City Council will explore ways to develop about 15 acres of the former high school site, including building a senior housing project near the city’s downtown area.

In the first public negotiation session between the two groups since November, members Wednesday agreed to seek proposals from developers within the next three weeks for projects on the upper and middle portion of the property.

The 26-acre site on Casey Road, which was vacated in 1988 because it had become too small, has been at the heart of a two-year dispute between the district and the city, resulting in at least five lawsuits between them.

The city has already agreed to purchase about seven acres of the lower fields to build a downtown park, and the district recently sold about an acre of the site, including its tennis courts, to the Moorpark Boys and Girls Club.

The district will seek a developer who can help it generate at least $300,000 a year in rent or a total of about $2.8 million if the land is sold.
