Uncertain Klingler Will Stay at Houston

From Staff and Wire Reports

University of Houston quarterback David Klingler, uncertain of his pro prospects, said Thursday he will return for his senior year instead of making himself available for the NFL draft.

Klingler, who set or tied 33 NCAA records in the Cougars’ run-and-shoot offense last season, surpassed the statistics of his predecessor, Andre Ware, who won the Heisman Trophy in 1989. Ware skipped his final season and was a first-round pick of the Detroit Lions, who gave him a four-year, $4.8-million contract.

Klingler, however, said that although there were rumors that some teams would be interested in him, “most of them were unsubstantiated.”

“I’ll be back,” Klingler said. “Most important was taking care of my teammates and taking care of my coach. If I didn’t come back, these guys would win nine, 10 or 11 games. I want to be part of that. I want to win them all.”
