ROUNDUP : Peterson’s Goal Pushes Marina Into First

Share

A second-half goal by Amy Peterson gave Marina High School a 1-0 victory over Edison Thursday and put the Vikings in a strong position to replace the Chargers as the Sunset League girls’ soccer champions.

Amy Peterson’s goal 15 minutes into the half on an assist by Rhiannon Tanaka was the first scored in two games this season between the two teams atop the Sunset League. Marina and Edison tied, 0-0, in their first meeting earlier this month.

By defeating Edison, the defending league champion and No. 2-ranked team in the Southern Section Division 4-A, unranked Marina (16-1-2, 7-0-1 in league) moves into first place with two games remaining. For Edison (13-3-6, 6-1-1) it was the first league loss since the 1988-89 season.

Edison’s crisp, controlled passing offense got the ball in dangerously close to Marina’s goal in the first half. But the Chargers were denied each time by goalkeeper Cristin Rossman, who made six of her nine saves in the half.

Rossman, who only had to make one diving save, was also protected by fullbacks Tanaka, Renee Close and Heather Huff and sweeper Shauna McMurphy, who repelled the persistent Edison drives.

While Edison methodically moved the ball around the field, Marina depended on breakaways and long passes for its offense.

On one of the breakaways, Tanaka crossed the ball to Peterson on the right side of the field and Peterson sent a hard arching shot into the opposite corner of the net.

“I told them I want them to keep shooting on the goal,” Marina Coach Andrea Willer said. “Eventually, one is going to go in.”

Edison Coach Elias Shehadi said Peterson was offside and the goal shouldn’t have been allowed. A couple minutes after the goal, Shehadi was given a yellow-card warning by the referee.

Afterward, Shehadi was still upset.

“Marina has some good skills,” he said. “Their record is good and they should be ranked. But they never dominated the game like we did.

“They’re a good team. We didn’t score, so they did something right.”
