General Dynamics to Lay Off 1,200: General Dynamics Corp., feeling the pinch of defense cuts even in the midst of the Gulf War, said it will lay off 1,200 workers in the next seven months as an Army tank contract winds down. About 600 of the employees are in the Detroit area, 500 in Lima, Ohio, and 100 in Scranton, Pa. The St. Louis-based company’s Land Systems division has been making 60 M-1A1 tanks a month. That will drop to 30 tanks per month after September.
