MIT, General Instruments Merge HDTV Efforts: Two competitors in the race to develop a system for broadcasting high-definition television, General Instrument Corp. and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, have agreed to join forces. They will now submit an HDTV system that uses the digital code of computers to the Federal Communications Commission, which will test competing HDTV proposals before choosing one in 1992. San Diego-based General Instrument last year became the first company to enter an all-digital system into the competition, a move which was later followed by competitors including American Telephone & Telegraph and Zenith. MIT had originally submitted its own analog system for testing.
