WORLD IN BRIEF : SUDAN : U.N. Official Says Famine is Imminent

A U.N. official predicted a famine will start in Sudan in two or three weeks, and relief officials have scheduled talks with the Sudanese government on how to provide emergency aid for more than 7 million people. “I see a tragedy unfolding,” said Charles LaMuniere, the U.N. director for emergency programs. Undersecretary General James Jonah will lead a U.N. delegation in talks with Sudanese officials from Feb. 15 to 17 on how to deliver food and supplies, he said. U.N. experts say Sudan requires 1.2 million tons of food because rains failed during the last harvest.
