County residents can call a new hot line to anonymously report any suspected violations of state and federal firearms laws, a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms spokesman said Friday.

The hot line has been termed a success in Washington, St. Louis, Phoenix and New Orleans, where there have been a significant change in the number of search warrants issued and the amount of firearms, narcotics and cash seized, the spokesman said.

The San Diego hot line is a joint effort by the firearms bureau, the U.S. attorney’s office, the county district attorney’s office and local county law enforcement agencies.

The project specifically targets drug dealers and convicted felons carrying firearms, as well as persons illegally possessing machine guns, sawed-off shotguns, bombs, silencers and other weapons.

Firearms violations can be reported by calling (619) 295-4867.

Cash rewards are offered in some instances, and the caller can remain anonymous.
