Video game champion Nintendo Co. Ltd. and consumer electronics maker Sony Corp. announced today that they are teaming up to develop a compact-disc player for Nintendo’s popular Super Famicom video game software.

The companies refused to describe details on the development, but industry analysts said the link could lead to a powerful new CD format.

The analysts speculated that cooperation between the two could eventually extend beyond technology to include the debut of characters from Sony-owned Columbia Pictures Entertainment Inc. movie studios in video games.
