PLATFORM : See Warning Signs

Share
BARBARA FULTS was honored recently for her volunteer work with the Exchange Club Child Abuse Prevention Center of Orange County, part of a national network. She says the cycle of child abuse must be broken. She told The Times:

Most people who abuse their children were abused themselves. They were taught that this is the accepted way to solve a problem: You hit, you beat, you hurt.

These parents have had no good role models. That’s where we come in and we say, “There are other ways to deal with problems. Let us help you.” See, children will love their parents no matter what. What we want to do is give them a life without pain.

If we can stop the abuse, then children see their parents are going to discipline them in positive ways. Children will then use these ways with their own children and we can stop this business of, “Well, that’s the way my mother did it and that’s the way I’m going to do it.”

We should be learning to recognize the warning signs of abuse and learn to do something about it like call an abuse hotline or support programs like the Exchange Club.

I would be willing to bet there’s not a community out there that doesn’t have this problem.
