MAI Systems Corp. said Tuesday that Robert J. Amman, the top executive of Western Union Corp., has been elected vice chairman of MAI’s board of directors.

Amman, who was already a director of MAI, has been president and chief executive of Western Union since January, 1988. Brooke Group Ltd., a company controlled by New York investor Bennett S. LeBow, owns a controlling interest in both Western Union and MAI. LeBow is chairman of MAI.

“I’ve known and worked closely with Bob Amman for a number of years,” LeBow said in a statement. “I have every confidence that his increased involvement with MAI will contribute substantially to the success of the company.” MAI has been making a transition from a manufacturer of computers to a reseller of computer software and hardware for industry-specific applications.
