COLLEGE ROUNDUP : USC Keeps Titans Skidding in Baseball

USC scored three runs in the seventh inning to break a tie and went on to defeat Cal State Fullerton, 7-4, in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday in Los Angeles.

It was the fourth consecutive loss for the Titans (1-4), who opened the season a week ago with a 7-2 victory over Cal Poly Pomona. Fullerton lost three games to Stanford over the weekend.

USC led, 4-0, after four innings, but the Titans rallied for two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to tie it at 4.

Steve Sisco and Phil Nevin had run-scoring singles in the fifth, and an error and an RBI single by Frank Herman gave Fullerton two runs in the sixth.

But USC came back to take the lead with three runs in the seventh. Three singles loaded the bases with one out off loser Tony Fetchel (0-1). Brett Jenkins then chased Fetchel with a two-round double. Chris Robinson replaced Fetchel and allowed a run-scoring single to Mike Robertson, a sophomore from Servite High School.

Robertson had a two-run home run in the fourth and Jeff Cirillo had a two-run home run in the third for USC (6-2).

In other nonconference games:

United States International 2, UC Irvine 0--With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Irvine starter David Bladow (0-1) walked Ed Crabtree. Mike Vallarelli followed with a single and then Bladow hit the next two batters to score a run and then walked in the second run. Billy Bardens went two for four for the Anteaters (1-4), who left 14 men on base.

Southern California College 7, Redlands 5--Donny Harrell had an RBI single in the eighth to break a 5-5 tie for host Southern California College (1-1). Matt Imus (1-0) pitched the eighth for the victory and Agustine Pena pitched the ninth for his first save. Brett Howard had two hits and an RBI for SCC.

Christ College Irvine 11, UC San Diego 3--Trailing 2-0, Christ College scored four runs in the third and three in the fourth. Mike Adams drove in three of the runs with a two-out double in the third. Adams, who pitched 4 2/3 innings of relief, allowed two hits and no runs to earn his first victory. Adams was two for four with four RBIs and Lou Simon was two for four with three RBIs for the host Eagles (2-1).

In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s basketball:

Frenso Pacific 75, Southern California College 72--Despite Jeff Bickmore’s 26 points and 11 rebounds, the Vanguards (18-6, 5-3), the No. 23-ranked NAIA team in the nation, lost their second game at home this season. SCC shot only 37% from the field, about 13 percentage points below its conference-leading average. Elbert Davis hit three-point shots with 45 seconds and 28 seconds left and Eric Carmichael made another with three seconds remaining but SCC’s rally fell short. Scott Patterson scored 17 points for Fresno Pacific (14-10, 6-2).

In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s basketball:

Fresno Pacific 60, Southern California College 45--Karen Murray had 13 points for Fresno Pacific (11-11, 4-2). Kristen Bevis had 21 points for SCC (10-14, 2-5).

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. men’s tennis:

UC Riverside 9, Chapman 0--Riverside, ranked 10th in Division II preseason poll, shut out the No. 9 Panthers in the opener for both teams at Chapman.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

UC Irvine 5, Washington 4--Irvine took five of six singles matches to win at home. Brett Hansen-Dent won, 6-4, 6-4, Mike Roberts won 6-4, 6-1, Jeff Miyamoto won, 5-7, 6-1, 6-0, Charles Wheeler won, 6-3, 7-5, and Andy Joe won, 6-0, 6-4, for Irvine (3-1). Washington (4-3) won all three doubles matches.
