P.M. BRIEFING : EC Jobless Rate Inches Higher
Unemployment in the European Community was up 0.1 percentage point in December to 8.4%, bringing the jobless rate for all of 1990 to 8.3%, officials said today.
The unemployment rate for 1989 was 8.9%, said Eurostat, the statistical agency for the 12-nation EC.
Henning Christophersen, the EC commissioner for economic affairs, said he was pleased that the jobless rate for 1990 as a whole was lower than the figure for 1989 but was “concerned” with the small increase from November to December.
The EC Commission predicts a growth rate of 2.2% for 1991, compared to an earlier forecast of 3% growth, and the slower growth “will not be enough for unemployment to fall in 1991,” the commission said in a statement.
