Monterey Park : Christmastime Already?
Mark this on the calendar: Only 79 days left till “Christmas in April” hits Monterey Park.
On April 27, volunteers and city officials will use donated materials and vehicles to help elderly residents, poor families and handicapped people make repairs on their homes as part of the nationwide Christmas in April program.
Depending on the number of participants and the amount of money raised, volunteers will fix roof leaks, paint walls, clean yards and make other improvements to up to 10 homes. The annual program, which began in 1973 in Midland, Tex., has spread to 60 cities in the United States. Monterey Park’s Christmas in April will be the first of its kind in Southern California.
Last week, the city kicked off a fund-raising drive for the effort, and it already has received several thousand dollars in donations from companies and individuals. For more information, call (818) 307-1385. Donations may be sent to 1000 Corporate Center Drive, Box 26, Monterey Park, 91754.
