One of the reputed hit men on trial in the murder of “Cotton Club” movie producer Roy Radin was beaten during a jailhouse fight with deputies, lawyers said Wednesday. Alex Marti, 29, showed up in court with broken ribs, bruises and a swollen face, leading Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Curtis Rappe to recess the trial for the day. The trial is in its fourth month.
The judge scheduled a Thursday morning hearing on the incident and indicated that deputies involved in the altercation may testify outside the presence of jurors.
Marti is one of four people on trial in the Radin slaying. Earlier in the trial, prosecution witness Carl Plzak testified that Marti and defendant William Mentzer took part in Radin’s murder on May 13, 1983. Radin was last seen getting into a limousine with Karen DeLayne (Lanie) Greenberger, another defendant. Radin’s body was found June 10, 1983, in a remote desert canyon near Gorman.
