California IN BRIEF : SACRAMENTO : $43.5 Million Spent on Governor’s Race

Although donation limits were in place for most of the campaign, Republican Pete Wilson and Democrat Dianne Feinstein spent $43.5 million in their race for governor--nearly twice their predecessors’ total. It came to about $5.60 per vote. Wilson, who edged Feinstein by 266,707 votes out of the 7.7 million cast Nov. 6, reported spending nearly $23.9 million in 1989 and 1990. Feinstein said she spent $19.5 million in the same period. Republican George Deukmejian and Democrat Tom Bradley spent $22.5 million in their 1985-86 race, according to Fair Political Practices Commission figures, or about $3.04 per vote.
