Romancing the Script: The UCLA Extension Writers’ Program chose nine student screenwriters Wednesday to receive the Diane Thomas Screenwriting Awards. At the fourth annual awards ceremony hosted by Michael Douglas at the Westwood Marquis Hotel, the $5,000 first prize went to student Carol Heikkinen for her romantic comedy about two tabloid reporters. Helena Kriel won the $3,000 second prize for a story about love and music in South Africa. The award is named for former UCLA Extension screenwriting student Diane Thomas, who wrote “Romancing the Stone” before she was killed in an automobile accident.
