P.M. BRIEFING : Sun-Times to Eliminate 120 Jobs
The Chicago Sun-Times says it must eliminate 120 jobs because of the sluggish economy, 45 through immediate dismissal and the rest through attrition, but it is talking with a union in hopes of lessening the blow.
Charles F. Champion, the paper’s vice president for community relations, called the cutbacks “an unfortunate but necessary step.”
However, the Chicago Newspaper Guild, which represents 250 editorial employees, has proposed letting its workers take unpaid days to avoid cutbacks on the news staff. How many editorial employees faced dismissal was not revealed.
The Sun-Times, the smaller of the city’s two large dailies, employs more than 1,600 people.
Severance pay will be awarded to those employees who are laid off, Champion said. He would not say how much money the privately held company hopes to save with the layoffs.
