UCSD (18-4) defeated host Whittier, 74-35, for its 12th consecutive victory. Kathleen Alvarez led UCSD with 16 points, Cari Young added 13 and grabbed 11 rebounds.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Tim Rapp, Rick Batt and Gordon McNeill combined to score 44 of UCSD’s 50 second-half points in an 81-64 victory over UC Santa Cruz. The Tritons (19-3) led, 31-28, at halftime before they pulled away for their school-record 11th consecutive victory. Batt scored all of his 17 points in the second half, and McNeill scored 12 of his 14. Rapp led all scorers with 27 points, 15 in the final 20 minutes. He also had 10 rebounds as Santa Cruz fell to 8-14.

Christian Heritage pulled off its biggest victory of the season, upsetting Fresno Pacific, 70-68, in a nonconference game at Grossmont College. Center Rob Meeter scored 16 of his game-high 22 points in the second half and Shane McKim (16 points) made six of seven free throws down the stretch as the Hawks (8-15) overcame a 12-point deficit with 11 minutes left. The Sunbirds, ranked No. 1 in NAIA District 3, fell to 15-11.

BASEBALL

San Diego State (4-2) defeated Pacific, 4-0, at SDSU’s Smith Field. Brian Holliday (1-1) was the winning pitcher. Scott Dennison went two-for-four to lead SDSU at the plate. Danny Miller, formerly of Poway High, was the loser. He struck out eight in six innings and gave up three earned runs. Pacific is 1-4.

USD split a West Coast Conference doubleheader with Pepperdine, dropping the opener, 4-3, and winning the second game, 7-6, in 10 innings. Both games were decided in the final inning. In the opener, the Toreros (2-4-1, 1-2) had the bases loaded against Waves reliever Sky Lasowitz when Jim Keen grounded into a game-ending double play. USD won the second game when Steve Stumpfl missed a suicide squeeze bunt but Pepperdine catcher Scott Vollmer threw the ball away trying to pick off Josh Stepner, who scored the winning run.

U.S. International trounced Cal State Dominguez Hills, 14-6, at home for its fourth consecutive victory. The Gulls (4-4) scored four runs in the second and six in the sixth while Jeff Matranga (1-2) struck out eight in seven innings for his first victory. Mike Garza and Darrin Forster hit back-to-back home runs in the seventh. Garza’s homer came in his first collegiate at bat.

A two-run uprising in the ninth inning fell short for UCSD, which dropped to 0-2 with a 4-3 loss to Cal Lutheran in its home opener at Triton Field. Karl Friedl was 2-4 and delivered an RBI double and a run scored in the ninth for UCSD. But Brent Hansen (0-1), who scattered five hits and struck out six in 7 2/3 innings, took the loss.

Point Loma Nazarene swept a doubleheader from Redlands, winning the first game, 2-1, and the second, 11-4. Rich Meyer hit a grand slam for Point Loma in the Game 2. Point Loma is 5-1, Redlands 0-3.

MEN’S TENNIS

SDSU’s Dax Peterson and Jeff Belloli lost in the consolation double championships at the Rolex National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships. Peterson and Belloli were defeated by Minnesota’s Anthony Cruz and Kevin Werwie, 6-2, 6-1.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Point Loma Nazarene (2-3) lost to host Loyola Marymount, 6-3. Singles winers for Point Loma were Sue Woodling, who defeated Jenny Knotts, 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 at No. 3 singles, and Tiffany Puckett, who defeated Shanna Brozek, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5 singles.

In doubles, Point Loma’s Eydie Pitney and Puckett defeated Brozek and Kim Billner, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.

Loyola Marymount is 7-5.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Host SDSU took two of three matches in the Asics Grand Prix tournament, defeating Ball State and Rutgers and losing to Long Beach State. The Aztecs will enter today’s final round 3-1 in the tourney behind the 49ers, who improved to 3-0 with an 8-15, 8-15, 15-9, 15-11, 17-15 victory over SDSU. Aztecs Mike Schlegel (26) and Mike Mattarocci (25) combined for 51 kills in that match.

TRACK AND FIELD

Floyd Barco ran to victories in the 100 and 200 meters to lead SDSU’s men to a narrow victory over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo at Choc Sportsman Oval. Barco’s times were 11.0 and 21.86, both wind-aided. The Aztecs finished with 88 points, Cal Poly 86 and Occidental 28. Marla Runyan, Darla Vaughn, Eric Predanovich and Louise Joubert each won two events to lead SDSU’s women to a 93-36 victory over Occidental.
