A solid majority of Americans support the Gulf War, even though most EXPECT A HIGH NUMBER OF U.S. CASUALTIES if a ground war takes place. A survey of 1,000 adults, which was commissioned by Time magazine and Cable News Network, said 79% of Americans expect U.S. casualties in a land war to be in the thousands or tens of thousands. Even with such losses, 58% say the war will be worth the toll it takes in American lives and other costs; 31% say it will not be worth it. About 48% predict that the war against Iraq will last one to six months, and 38% say it will last longer, the poll said.
