And Heeeeere’s . . . Jay?A New York newspaper reported Monday that Johnny Carson will be replaced as host of “The Tonight Show” by guest host Jay Leno one year after Carson’s current contract expires in September. NBC denied the account. The New York Post, quoting an unnamed “high-ranking television industry source,” reported that NBC had decided to give Carson the boot after his 30th season because Leno’s appearances consistently draw higher ratings than Carson’s and attract a younger audience. NBC Entertainment President Warren Littlefield responded Monday that, “We expect our long and close association with Johnny to continue. He will be the one who decides when he will leave the show and he has given no indication that he is prepared to do so.” Ed Hookstratten, Carson’s attorney, said, “It’s not our practice to comment on non-factual matters, untruths, leaks and irresponsible media plants.” Carson, 65, reportedly works on a year-to-year contract and makes about $20 million annually.
