Ex-Labor Secretary to Mediate Paper Strike
A former U.S. secretary of labor agreed Monday to union and company requests that he mediate the bitter Daily News strike.
W. J. Usery was a key figure last year in the settlement of a seven-month strike at Pittston Coal Co. in West Virginia.
He also helped mediate disputes involving Chicago public school teachers, the United Auto Workers and professional football players. He was secretary of labor under President Ford.
Both sides in the Daily News strike, which began Oct. 25, met separately with Usery last week in Washington to urge him to step in.
