From Times Staff and Wire Reports

An inner-city school is trying a new tactic to interest parents in their children’s education: It’s paying them. The experimental program at Webster Elementary School in east Oakland pays parents $100 each for taking an 11-week program that teaches ways of helping children in the classroom and with homework. Nine parents have graduated, picking up $100 plus a $50 bonus for achieving goals set out at the start of the program. The program, which costs between $15,000 and $20,000, may be extended to another school in the spring, officials said.
