An Italian-American organization today accused the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of reaching “the height of insensitivity” in bestowing several Oscar nominations on the Mafia movies “GoodFellas” and “The Godfather Part III.”

The National Italian-American Foundation, concerned that Italian-Americans are being unfairly stereotyped as gangsters in movies, said it will contact key people associated with the two movies in hopes of correcting the characterization.

The NIAF statement said the nominations “sanction movies that achieve success at the expense of an ethnic group which is stereotyped and maligned.”
