The San Diego City Council has voted to raise the minimum temperature at which the city will open the Municipal Gymnasium in Balboa Park as an emergency shelter for the homeless.

In a 7-0 vote Monday, the council raised the threshold to 40 degrees, or 50 degrees if half an inch or more of rain is forecast.

The amendments to the city’s emergency shelter plan increase the minimum temperature that triggers opening of the shelter from the current 35 degrees, or 40 degrees if at least half an inch of rain is predicted.

The change also brings the city in line with temperatures used by the state in determining when to open armories as emergency facilities for the homeless.
