World IN BRIEF : PHILIPPINES : Higher Rent Sought for U.S. Use of Bases

The Philippines told the United States it wants to increase what it charges for use of American military bases after current leases expire in September. Philippine negotiators made the proposal one day after chief U.S. negotiator Richard Armitage offered what U.S. officials called a “reasonable” package for continued use of Clark Air Base, the Subic Bay naval base and four smaller installations. No price was mentioned.
