Alhambra Goes to the Well as Way to Aid Troops in Gulf

Some cities have turned the color yellow into a show of support for U.S. troops in the Persian Gulf. Alhambra thinks the color green might also be appropriate.

At the suggestion of City Councilman Michael A. Blanco, the council Monday instructed city staff to study the possibility of changing water bills to give residents the option of donating a dollar to help Alhambra reservists who have been called up.

Blanco said many reservists have had to give up well-paying jobs and still have mortgage payments to make and families to support. Money raised by the city could go to help make up that loss, he said.

In other war-related activities this week in the San Gabriel Valley:

A rally to support U.S. troops will be held in Pomona from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Friday at the corner of Garey Avenue and Mission Boulevard. The rally is sponsored by Mayor Donna Smith, who has two sons in military service, and Linda Bustos, a resident with a brother in the Persian Gulf.

The Rosemead City Council on Tuesday authorized American Legion Post No. 425 to hang yellow banners at entrances to the city. Banners will hang at the west and east borders of the city at Garvey Avenue and Valley Boulevard, said Frank Larson, an officer of the post.
